1947 A7 telescoping center stand HELP!!!!

Hello,
I'm restoring a '47 A7 and I need help finding the parts to put the center stand together. The '47 takes an odd spring loaded telescoping center stand with a ratchet mechanism. It was a novel idea and from what I understand a real bad design and did not work very well but would be real neat on a restored bike....if I could just find the parts! If there is anybody out there who has any idea where I could get any of these'47 A7 center stand parts please let me know!!!!!

Didn't Rudges have a similar design?

I've never even seen one of these and would be very wary of riding with one fitted. I've heard of them slipping out onto road while riding so be exceptionally careful that this does not happen to you. The replacement centre stand is not much better either... good luck in sourcing the parts needed.

Hey guys,
About all I know for sure about a Rudge is that I don't know anything about them!
As far as the BSA A7 stand falling down while riding, it is spring loaded so if the spring has proper tension and the two nuts that keep the spring in place don't come loose there should be no chance of it falling down while riding.
The real problem is that the stand was held down against spring tension by a ratchet mechanism that would be released by a small lever in front of the battery box and one accidental tap of the lever or curious poke by a passerby would lead to the stand retracting and the bike falling over.
I figure a '47 A7 is too much of an antique to be a rider so I don't plan on spending much time riding it. I just want to make it as close to factory specs as possible and obtaining the centerstand parts is the last major hurdle to overcome.
Again, any help would be appreciated!

I have two 1947 A7s one has normal center stand the other has no center stand but is suppose to have the type you are chasing. So I am chasing one as well. I have never seen one other than in the BSA manual drawings.

I think the factory must have done a recall on them and fitted standard types!

I would imagine the only option will be to make replica parts based on the '47 parts book images.

Hi, I have a 1947 bike with the type of stand you are looking for, I purchased it about 5 years ago unrestored, all I have done is put it with the other bikes in the shed.
It think the springs are missing I am sure everything else is there, I have not looked at it too closely so I will have a look at it as soon as can.
Do you have the stand or any of the parts, I know that you will have trouble finding them as I have only seen one with the stand and thats mine.
If you are desperate to have the correct stand I may be able to get my parts copied but this could take a while as I am very busy with work, I have not touched a bike in 2 years but I hope to be less busy next year.
Regards Andy

Hi Andy I would definitely be interested in seeing some pics of your stand parts and if they can be made that would be really good.
cheers Terry
