My guess is a timing side bush conversion, first time I've seen one with a outer cover modification though , anybody know if this was a purpose cast cover or had the lump welded in?

I reckon it could be for a home made oil pressure gauge as its so close to the pump. Looks a little low to have any connection to the timing bush.

I'm inclined to go with Bill and LJ. Timing side bearing and OP gauge. With a tacho drive there it would be hard to get to the OPR valve for a gauge, but looking at the plumbing his gauge must be the size of a Vincent speedo. eek
Cheers

You'd use plumbing that size for an oil filter between the pump and the crank feed.
