Coil on a magneto???

Took the tank off today prior to the re-built mag being installed and decided to take the seat off to see what is underneath. All looks ok - apart from the fact that there is a small coil fitted near the battery... it's not connected to anything and I've no idea why it would be there unless it was converted back to a magneto from coil ignition at some point. So that will be hitting the rubbish bin - unless you tell me otherwise of course.
