Hi, I have just bought my first classic bike (BSA 250 STARFIRE 1969/70) after years of japanese stuff.
The bike has indicators fitted they look terrible, do they need to be on for the MOT or can i throw them?
Please any advice or hints are more than welcome, i have a lot to learn.........

I believe they were original equipment and if so you need to retain them for the mot

Not heard of that one Mike. If lights are fitted they must be in working order, its possible a MOT tester could question things if the indicator switch is still on the bike.
1st August 1986 is the cut off date, before that you dont need indicators, on or after that date they must be fitted.

Nice bike, and congrats. But as is says in the title, this forum is about the A7\A10. Members here will surely help with any general info about other bikes, but maybe try some of the other british bike forums if you want to get in touch with Starfire specialists. btw, I think it looks very good with the indicators, and they are safety items as well!

Hello there,
Starfires are great bikes. I used to have one....and miss it dearly.
They benefit greatly from a lower compression piston. The engine will last a lot longer
I made a lot of long trips 2 up on mine. They handle well, have great brakes and 12 volt lighting. They are proper useable motorbikes.
You don't need to have indicators on it.
Most of the info here isn't relevant to what you have as we're concentrating on the earlier twin cylinder bikes, but you are still welcome here.

While I'm thinking about it...
If you're used to riding Japanese stuff be aware that Starfires whilst revvy will not not take certain types of punishment, They are good for over 80mph, don't try it regularly. They will happily sit all day at 55-60, don't expect to thrash them on the carriageway for long distances. Enjoy it, they are fun bikes.

hi andy i had a yamaha rd 80 lc it did have indicators on it but they didn't work so i took them off
i did my bike test without them used arm signals and i passed my test so i dont think you have to have indicators on it
it also passed an mot like that hope this helps passed my test in 1991 You are not legally required to have indicators on
your motorcycle. However, once fitted it is a legal requirement that they work properly

The indicators are lucas items, they were fitted to most bikes of the period and dont look out of place in that context.
