On my 1961 A10 Flash the LH footrest spigot is bent.. Although I eventually got the shaft out no way is it going to go back. Does anyone have they don't want, or does anyone know what the part number is (they're unmarked & there are 3 different types for the LHS). It's about 4 & a quarter inches long excluding the locating pin.

Thanks
Adrian

I straightened the footrests and the spigots when restoring my A10 by heating with the oxy-acetylene burner. Might be worth giving it a try maybe?

Thanks MG,
I have a friend with an oxy kit, as you say may be worth a try as I have nothing to lose here - difficult to ride without footrests!!
Cheers,

That looks about right!! A mate has just taken mine for a bit of "persuasion" involving a big vice, two lengths of bar and an oxy torch.. Don't know if it will work though..

One in your photo looks original, is the other tube designed to be fitted to the original casting or is the round piece involved somehow??

Thanks,
Adrian

The top part is the original (bent). The middle splined shaft is what I made.
The next stage was to remove the original bent shaft from the forging by heating until the braze melted and pressed the old bent tube out. Pressed in the new splined tube, rebrazed. Painted job done.

It does help to have a CNC lathe and CNC milling machine handy but I'm a bit fortunate there.

The broached ring on the left is a 3/4 x 48 serration gauge made to control the serration size on the shaft.

Hi Des,
That explains it well, thanks.. I have neither the equipment or skills for such a thing - it looks a lovely piece of work though..

The friend that is hoping to straighten it has the skills but no CNC gear or press (he has a lathe, oxy kit & various other things).
My original is bent in the middle so I'm hoping for the best.

How easy are the splined sections to make ??

Thanks

Hello Adrian,

The pics came from my post (New member A7SS Melksham) If you trawl through you can see the method of manufacture. The spline is a standard 3/4" x 48 which was used on Jaguar and Rover steering columns. In production we used to roll these settations in under 2 seconds each but the cut versions (not as strong but adequate for foot rest mounts) take a few minutes each on a four axis milling machine.

If you get stuck PM your details and I can make up a replacement spigot for which you would need to send me the old one and a matching footrest. I see you are not far away from Melksham.

Hi Adrian,
The footrest mounts are available on Ebay, some are sold in pairs some individually!

Thanks Des, I'll bear that in mind... As you say I'm not far from Melksham. My mate has however reappeared with mine today & it's much improved . It's not perfect but pretty damn good and the shaft runs freely though it.

I'm in the process of repainting it now. As John says they are available on Ebay (but they're usually the longer ones - I've tried!) but it's the Shepton jumble soon so I'll keep an eye out then, just in case a better one turns up.

Thanks for the help & suggestions..

Hi Des,
With luck we'll arrive about the same time.. Wish I'd thought of this earlier - we could have arranged to meet up.. I presume there'll be a BSA stand, I'll try & be there around 11am..

Cheers,
Adrian
